CNS731 Marriage & Family Counseling Syllabus

Course Description: This course is designed to help each student understand marriage and family issues from a Biblical and counseling perspective. You will learn the Biblical principles of marriage and receive an overview of how to deal with common, marital, marriage and family problems.

 

Text Books:

Hidden Keys to a Loving Lasting Marriage by Gary Smalley

Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggrichs

 

Additional Graduate Text Book: DNA of Relationships by Gary Smalley

IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THIS COURSE YOU MUST MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS.

1. First read and underline important passages and insights in the textbooks Hibben Keys and Love & Respect.

2. Watch each DVD and take any additional notes not covered in the textbooks.

3. Write a 3 page paper discussing you personal understanding on what a truly Biblical marriage is to be like. Support your ideas with specific Bible verses. If you are married, is your marriage a Biblical marriage and if not how could you change it to be one? If you are not married, how would you achieve a Biblical marriage in your future? Do not just repeat back what has been discussed on your DVDs or from the text books but integrate what you have learned with your own ideas and Biblical knowledge.

4. Write a 5 page paper discussing how you would help resolve a particular marriage and family problem. Find additional information or research on the subject and cite at least 3 references other than the Bible. Do not just repeat back what has been discussed in the class but integrate what you have learned with your own ideas and Biblical knowledge.

5. FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY. Write a 7 page paper discussing how you would use attachment theory to help resolve a different marriage and family problem. Find additional information or research on the subject and cite at least 3 additional references other than the Bible. For more information on on attachment see Safe Haven Marriage by Archibald D. Hart and Sarah Hart Morris or Attachments by Tim Clinton and Gary Sibcy. Do not just repeat back what has been discussed in the class but integrate what you have learned with your own ideas and Biblical knowledge.

6. Take the open book test which will be E-mailed to you when you obtain these materials. You may use your notes, book, or the DVDs for reference.

7. Submit your papers and final examination to Word of Life Institute for grading via E-mail at submit@freechristiancounselingtraining.com.
